Westlight Studios  •  Branding Portraits

Working with Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom for the second time felt like coming home. As a MacArthur Fellow, New York Times columnist, professor, and author of Lower Ed and Thick, Tressie brings unmatched clarity and cultural depth to everything she does.

We shot at Westlight Studios with one vision: clean, elevated portraits that reflect her presence and brilliance. Not a look. A person.

"When it was time to re-up my headshots I didn't dally with looking for one. I traveled four hours both ways to go to the person I trusted. She did not disappoint."

— Dr. Tressie McMillan Cottom

That kind of trust is a gift. It is also the standard every session is held to.

The Story

It was more than a photo session. It was a full-on vibe.

Our team brought the magic. Kenya Iman styled Tressie with refined intention, beautifully shaping her as the "southern Black lady ushering in her future." Nissi Lee added her expert touch with polished hair and makeup, while Anthony Romano kept the energy high and everything running smoothly.

We danced to 90s R&B, laughed between setups, and filled the studio with joy. Together, we created portraits that honor Tressie's complexity, confidence, and evolution.

This wasn't about capturing a look. It was about reflecting her power, ease, and future-forward story.

01  •  The Environment

Clean Light. Real Space.

Westlight Studios gave us everything we needed: a neutral space where light could do its job without competition. Muted backdrops, controlled directional light, and a room full of intention. The environment exists to serve the subject, not the other way around.

02  •  The Approach

Presence Over Polish.

The goal was never a perfect headshot. It was portraits that are unmistakably her, built to carry the weight of a book launch, a speaker profile, a magazine cover. Styled by Kenya Iman. Made with care. Designed to last.

The Session

About This Kind of Work

What makes a great branding photography session?

Great branding photography starts before the camera. It's in the styling conversation, the choice of space, the way the room feels when you walk in. The images that last are the ones where the subject actually showed up, not performed. Every session is designed to create those conditions.

Do you work with authors, academics, and public figures?

Yes, and it's some of the most meaningful work that comes through the studio. Whether you're a first-time author or a MacArthur Fellow, you deserve images that carry the full weight of your work. Clients have traveled hours for this. The trust is earned, then protected.

Where do Nashville branding sessions take place?

Sessions happen in the studio and on location across Nashville, including spaces like Westlight Studios. The location is always chosen to serve the vision. Book a session to talk through what's right for yours.

Who makes up the creative team?

Nashville's best, available when the session calls for it. Kenya Iman for styling, Nissi Lee for hair and makeup, Anthony Romano for production support. Every person in that room is there because they raise the work.
